Real Sociedad vs Real Madrid: The Two Clubs That Opened the Super Cup in 1982

The second semi-final of the 2027 Spanish Super Cup pairs Real Sociedad and Real Madrid — and it is a meeting with deep roots. These two clubs contested the very first Spanish Super Cup, back in 1982, when the competition was a two-legged tie rather than the single match it is today.

That inaugural edition went to Real Sociedad. Real Madrid took the first leg 1–0 at the Santiago Bernabéu, but Real Sociedad overturned it in San Sebastián, winning the return 4–0 after extra time to take the trophy 4–1 on aggregate. It remains the only Spanish Super Cup Real Sociedad have ever won — one reason the same pairing, 45 years on, carries particular weight for the club.

For Real Madrid the Super Cup is far more familiar ground: the club has won it 13 times, second only to Barcelona. The two sides arrive in Istanbul by different routes — Real Sociedad as the 2025–26 Copa del Rey winners, Real Madrid as La Liga runners-up — and the modern format strips it to one night: whoever loses on 3 February is out, with no second leg.
